A big market isn't necessarily the right market. At Algeria Business Bay's first masterclass, Ahmed El Amraoui, an export expert with 25 years of experience, shared his method for choosing an export market and landing a first customer. Here it is in six steps.
Market potential × Accessibility × Ability to win = Export priority. If any one of the three is weak, the market isn't a priority.
- Check your export readiness. Score your product, production capacity, margins, organization, compliance and sales tools from 1 to 5. Fix anything below 3 before entering a market. Never sell capacity you can't reliably deliver.
- Define what you're really exporting. Start with your offer and your ideal customer, not with countries. The goal: a one-sentence export value proposition.
- Narrow down your markets. Go from 30 to 50 possible markets to 8 or 10, then to 3 priority markets and finally 1 launch market, using a weighted selection matrix: demand, growth, competition, margins, regulatory access, logistics, buyer accessibility and country risk.
- Validate in the field. Talk to 5 to 10 buyers or distributors per market: why would they switch suppliers, what price will they accept, what first order is realistic? Compare your landed cost with their real alternative, not your factory price.
- Choose your route to market. Direct sales, distributor, agent, private label or e-commerce: the right market with the wrong channel can still fail.
- Target 20 qualified accounts. Not thousands of contacts. Your first message isn't meant to sell, but to earn the next conversation: context, relevance, value, then a small ask such as a 15-minute call.
- Days 1 to 30: select your 3 markets and your first 20 accounts.
- Days 31 to 60: validate your offer with buyers and start outreach.
- Days 61 to 90: samples, quotations, negotiation and a first order.
Don't export everywhere. Identify the markets where you can win, then engage them fast.
