Algeria captures 20% of African hydrogen demand after consumption grows 4 times

Hydrogen demand in Africa surged by over 72% between 2012 and 2024, reaching 3.1 million tons, compared to 1.8 million tons 12 years ago, with Algeria ranking second in Africa with a share of 20% of total demand, behind Egypt which captured 49%. A recent report, reviewed by the Energy Research Unit, indicated that Algeria increased its hydrogen consumption by about four times during the same period, reaching 0.7 million tons in 2024, making it one of the largest hydrogen markets in Africa alongside Egypt and Nigeria. The Sonelgaz group has enhanced its production capacity by more than 1850 additional megawatts in anticipation of the summer season to meet peak demand periods.
