World Bank: 75,000 forest fires hit Algeria over 37 years
A report from the World Bank revealed that Algeria recorded more than 75,000 forest fires between 1985 and 2022, with an annual average of about 35,000 hectares of burned forests. The direct losses from the summer 2021 fires in the agriculture and housing sectors alone exceeded $124 million, after the fires claimed the lives of more than 100 people, prompting authorities to adopt a new approach to managing forest fire risks, focusing on prevention and enhancing resilience. The report, published last June and titled 'From Fires to Resilience: Rethinking Algeria's Forest Management,' indicated that the areas burned annually are equivalent to about 50,000 football fields.
