Annaba, formerly Bône during the French colonial period and Hippo in antiquity, is the fourth largest city in Algeria after the capital Algiers, Oran, and Constantine. Capital of the wilaya of Annaba, it is located 152 km northeast of Constantine, 246 km east of Jijel, and about 80 km west of the Tunisian border. It is also a coastal metropolis with a population exceeding 700,000 inhabitants. Annaba is situated on the southern shore of the Mediterranean basin. The city rises at the back of a bay open to the east on the Gulf of Annaba. It is dominated to the west by the Edough mountain range (1,008 m altitude).
