The wilaya of Béchar was created in the 1970s; previously it belonged to the wilaya of Saoura and was composed of 11 communes at that time. During the 1985 redistricting, 10 new communes were created in the wilaya of Béchar along with the wilaya of Tindouf. In 2019, the new wilaya of Béni Abbès was created within the territory of the wilaya.
