Bouira

Created from the 1974 redistricting, the wilaya of Bouira (Touviret in Tamazight) is located southeast of Algiers with an area of 4,454 km². With a population of 742,855 inhabitants, it has a density of 167 inhabitants per km². It is bordered to the north by the wilayas of Boumerdès and Tizi Ouzou, to the south by M'Sila and Médéa, to the east by Béjaïa and Bordj Bou Arréridj, and to the west by Blida and Médéa. Bouira constitutes an essential center for trade and transit to the south and east of the country. This position gives it a leading role in territorial planning policy, featuring major structural projects including the East-West Highway and the dams of Tilesdit (167 million cubic meters) and Koudiet Acerdoune (640 million cubic meters). Its primarily agricultural vocation opens wide prospects for agro-food processing activities. Furthermore, given the diversity and richness of its natural landscapes, the tourism and crafts sector of the wilaya has significant potential for development.
